Pigot's Directory for South Wales, 1830 : Dyfed Entries

Trade directories were produced, from the early 19th century, as commercial publications advertising trades in a particular locality. Initially these were confined to the larger towns and published annually for a region or county. The Dyfed entries have been extracted from Pigot's Directory for South Wales, in 1830, and are listed alphabetically giving the trade category reference, town, and address if listed. This directory gave the population of Cardiganshire as 57,784, Carmarthenshire as 90,239, and Pembrokeshire as 74,009. The places listed were Aberayron, Aberystwyth, Cardigan, Carmarthen, Fishguard, Haverfordwest, Kidwelly, Kilgerran, Lampeter, Llandilo-Fawr, Llandovery, Llanelly, Llangadock, Milford Haven, Narberth, Newcastle-in-Emlyn, Newport, Pembroke, Pembroke Dock, St.Clears & Laugharne, St.Davids & Solva, St.Dogmells, and Tenby. Spelling of names and places is as found in the original publication. One trader may have more than one entry, for instance Lewis Pugh of Aberystwyth has entries under Grocers & Tea dealers, Merchants, and Linen & Woollen drapers. All the categories are listed below with the associated codes used in the list. The list is sorted by address within name so that multiple entries may be assessed. Each entry gives the surname, selected by intial letter below, followed by forename, category code, address if given, and directory section.

Trade Directories for the UK can be purchased, on CD, from most commercial genealogical suppliers.

A large number of directories have been digitised by the Historical Directories Project
