About Dyfed FHS

The Society was founded in 1982 to encourage and assist people in all parts of the world who are pursuing family history research related to Dyfed which comprises the old counties of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, and Pembrokeshire. The Society also welcomes members who have no Dyfed ancestors but are interested in Dyfed history generally.

The Society has branches in Cardigan, Carmarthen, Haverfordwest, Llandovery, Llanelli and London. Each branch has a programme of meetings with talks on a wide range of subjects, as well as research evenings when members help each other with personal research. Each branch maintains a small library of research material.

The Society publishes a 64 page journal, which is distributed free to members three times a year. The journal keeps members in touch with Society affairs but also contains many articles about people, places and social history. The journal Includes requests from members for help with research.

Each member may record their research interests. These can be people who they are researching or people they have researched and about whom they would be willing to share information. An index of all members’ research interests is published on our website. The research interests of new members are published in the journal.

Information on our website is available to the public but some information is for members only. Included is:

  • Information about people and places in Dyfed including many sources for personal research.
  • The Journal Archive and Index where members can read past journals on line
  • The Strays Database where members can access thousands of names of people born in Dyfed but found elsewhere.
  • The Dyfed Database, which contains detailed knowledge about places and parishes in Dyfed.

Project work, such as surveying graveyards and transcribing monumental inscriptions or other sources of information, is undertaken by the branches of the Society. This is an opportunity to meet other members.

Our website is the most appropriate route to membership particularly for those from overseas.

Payment can be made on line and members obtain immediate access to our resources
