People

Caroline du Buisson 1788-1869
Address/Location:

No photographs are available.

The wife of William du Buisson ( see below), Caroline was responsible for the rebuilding of the church at Llandyfan, and the renovation of Llandybie church. One of her most important legacies to the area was the creation of a school at Banc-y-felin near her home at Glynhir. Here she provided free education around 30 local girls, giving access to a lending library and providing warm winter cloaks. The girls studied religion, arithmetic, writing, geography and needlework.

A story credits Caroline with riding to London on hearing the news that Napoleon had escaped from Elba. Here she bought British government stocks, which she was able to sell at a great profit on the news of Napoleon's defeat - the resulting profits funding her school at Llandyfan and a row of chestnut trees at Glynhir.

Gomer Roberts 1904-1993
Address/Location:

Born one of eleven children at the farm of Cwmbach, Llandybie, Gomer Roberts was a theological historian and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Wales. At 13 he began work as an anthracite miner, and at the age of 19 - with the support of the WEA and his fellow miners - he entered higher education.

He was ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church of Wales in 1930, and by 1973 was elected Moderator of the General Assembly. He studied the Welsh Methodist revival of the 18th C, publishing a biography of William Williams ( see Llanfair-ar-y Bryn) and other Welsh hymn writers, The History of the Parish of Llandybie, and contributed to the Dictionary of Welsh Biography. In addition to his prolific writings he edited the journal of the Calvinistic Methodist Historical Society, and was responsible for its Trevecka Records Series.

The University of Wales awarded him the Ellis Griffith Memorial Prize and two honorary degrees. On retirement he returned to Llandybie, and died at Glanaman.

William du Buisson 1781-1828
Address/Location:

No photographs are available.

William was the descendent of a French Huguenot family, who had owned the mansion at Glynhir since 1770. The family set up a "knife-factory" at Glynhir, using French labour. There have been suggestions that he manufactured arms for the French at Llandyfan Forge , but this is unproved.
