People

Bridget Bevan (Madam Bevan) 1698-1779
Address/Location:

Born in Derllys Court CMN, Madam Bevan was a philanthropist and educationalist, founding at least two schools of her own at Llandilo Abercowin and Llandybie. She became the patron and advisor of Griffith Jones, Click here of the Welsh-language circulating schools.
After the death of his wife, Griffith Jones went to live at the home of Madam Bevan at Laugharne. At his death he bequeathed to her his school funds and private fortune to continue his work of circulating school, to which she added a further £10,000. Her will was disputed by relatives and the fund was placed in Chancery. By the time the money was released in 1804, the fund had grown to over £30,000. The money was spent on education as Madam Bevan had wished, but the circulating school movement came to an end as existing schools where absorbed into the system of National Schools. Madam Bevan was buried -as was Griffith Jones -in Llanddowror.
