People

Joseph Jenkins 1818-1898
Address/Location:

Born on Blaenplwyf Farm to Jenkin and Elinor Jenkins, Joseph was educated locally. He married a local girl, and they took the tenancy of Trecefel Farm, Tregaron. He was interested in poetry, literature, current affairs and philosophy, and became a successful farmer.

In 1869, possibly as the result of worsening relationships with his wife, he left for Australia, and arrived in Melbourne. He travelled the gold mining areas around Ballarat in Victoria, working as a drain cleaner in Maldon from 1884. He had always kept diaries, and those relating to his years in Australia provide a wealth of information on the developing country and the lives of his fellow Welshmen working in the goldfields.

He returned to Trecefel in 1895 and died in 1898. His surviving diaries are held in the State Library of Victoria; extracts were published as The Diary of a Welsh Swagman in 1975.
