People

Christmas Evans 1766-1838
Address/Location:

Known as "The Bunyan of Wales", Christmas Evans was born into a poor family in Llandysul. He was an illiterate farm labourer, and became the servant of a Presbyterian minister. Here he learned to read and write and joined the Baptist church. He was a powerful preacher, travelling, preaching and raising funds for new chapels in the Llyn Peninsula, Anglesey, Caerphilly and Cardiff. He was taken ill whilst touring South Wales and died in Swansea where he was buried.

Jenkin Lloyd Jones 1843-1918
Address/Location:

Richard and Mary Lloyd Jones, a Unitarian farming family from Llandysul, emigrated with their family - including their seventh child Jenkin - to Wisconsin, USA in 1844. Jenkin volunteered for the Wisconsin Volunteers and saw action in the Civil War, including the battles of Vicksburg and Chattanooga. His wartime experiences left him a determined pacifist.

He returned to the family farm, before deciding to study for the ministry. In 1866 he enrolled at a Unitarian college in Meadville, Pensylvannia. In 1870 he married Susan Barber, the daughter of English immigrants. After his initial spell as a minister he resigned and became a travelling missionary, founding several churches on his extensive travels. In 1884 he became the minister of the Unitarian church of All Souls in Chicago, and created a community outreach arm called the Abraham Lincoln Centre. Following his pacifist beliefs he preached and wrote against the Spanish-American war. He built up the work of the Western Unitarian Conference and helped to found Unity, a liberal reforming journal.

After the death of his wife Susan in 1911 Jenkin married a co-worker in 1915. He died in 1918 at Tower Hill in Wisconsin.

John David Lewis 1859-1914
Address/Location:

Born and educated in Llandysul, John David Lewis was the son of a grocer. He worked in his fathers shop, but always wanted to establish a printing press. The opportunity came on the death of his father in 1889, and in 1892 he bought his first press, and employed W J Jones as a master printer for the Gomer Press. The press prospered, and in 1945 became a publishing company, specialising in books with a Welsh interest in Welsh and English. The Lewis family continues to run the printing and publishing business in Llandysul - including the printing of the Dyfed FHS Journal.
